Airbus and Critical Software Join Forces to Shape the Future of Aerospace Software
Combining decades of aerospace and software expertise, Airbus and Critical Software seek to innovate embedded systems to enhance safety in aircraft.
The partnership aims to secure long-term expertise in safety-critical software as aerospace systems become more digital and complex.
In a strategic move to strengthen its capabilities in software engineering, Airbus and Critical Software have signed a Letter of Intent to explore the creation of a joint undertaking focused on embedded software development for aerospace applications.
The collaboration seeks to harness Airbus' deep aerospace knowledge and Critical Software’s established expertise in designing safety-critical and certifiable software across multiple domains, including avionics, cabin systems, and connectivity technologies, aligning with the demands of increasingly digital and complex aircraft.
“As embedded software becomes increasingly central to our products, securing the right expertise and capacity is key,” said Sabine Klauke, Chief Technology Officer at Airbus. She added that the initiative demonstrates Airbus’ intent “to build robust, long-term capabilities in a highly specialised domain” with partners who bring world-class technical depth, such as Critical Software.
The companies say the move would secure essential long-term software development resources at a time when digitalisation is reshaping the aerospace landscape. The potential new structure is still subject to regulatory approvals and further evaluation.
João Carreira, CEO of Critical Software, highlighted the significance of the step forward, noting: “We’re proud to announce a new chapter in our collaboration with Airbus – one that reflects our shared ambition to shape the future of aerospace software.” He underlined the joint focus on innovation in systems “where safety and reliability are paramount,” and emphasised a shared commitment to “building a better, safer world.”
The partnership underscores a growing trend in the aerospace sector: securing specialised software talent to meet the evolving demands of smarter, more connected aircraft systems.
